CC-licensed boardgame about demonstrators and cops seeks Kickstarter funds!

Via Boingboing.net

Justin Nichol sez, “Black Flag Games is currently running a Kickstarter to produce a radical boardgame project called ‘A Las Barricadas’. It is a boardgame about conflict between state police and anti-authoritarian demonstrators. It is a two-player game with each player representing one of these social forces. The theatre of the conflict is street demonstration. It has been designed to inspire tactical consideration and conversation and is being developed and designed by the Black Flag Games Collective, committed to the idea that games and interactive media can have an impact in the struggle for a free and cooperative world. We are also committed to the ideals of free culture and aim to deliver professional play experiences that enrich a participatory entertainment culture.”

The game has seen light playtesting and has been in development for well over a year. We want to involve the broader community in refining and polishing the game before final publication. So as part of our Kickstarter, you will be able to sign up to receive a Playtester Prototype as a reward, which you will receive well before the final game is shipped. You will also receive surveys and a means with which to communicate issues and bugs in the game before it goes to print. You will also receive a special playtester credit in the rulebook of the game.

God Only Knows What Devils We Are

via INSTITUTE FOR EXPERIMENTAL FREEDOM

And, as it were, Mr. Chris Hedges

8.5×11 Imposed Pamphlet PDF

Readable PDF

Introduction courtesy of Crimethinc

The past few months have seen a backlash led by professional journalists against diversity of tactics in the Occupy movement. Rebecca Solnitrepresented our Dear Occupiers pamphlet as “a screed in justification of violence” simply because it endorsed diversity of tactics. Chris Hedges followed up by calling “black bloc anarchists”—an invented category—“The Cancer in Occupy.” Both allege that a violent fringe is undermining the movement and must be excluded from it.

What is taking place here is a kind of silencing. Defining people as “violent” is fundamentally a way to delegitimize them; Solnit and Hedges feel entitled to spread falsehoods about their political adversaries because their goal is to shut them out of the discussion entirely. That’s why Hedges acknowledges he never spoke to anyone involved in a black bloc in the course of composing his diatribe. Perhaps we shouldn’t expect better from journalists with their own wikipedia pages and glamor shots, who have much to lose should popular movements cease to be managed from the top down.

To counteract this silencing, we sought out our comrades from the heart of the black bloc and asked them to tell their side of the story: where they come from, why they participate, how they see the world. We do not accept the terms set by the mudslingers: our intent is not to compete for ideological legitimacy on a battlefield of abstractions, but to foster mutual understanding grounded in personal experience.

Death To Capitalism w/ Ben Morea! – March 26th @ the Spectacle

BEN MOREA in person!

DEATH TO CAPITALISM CINEMA

BEN MOREA IN PERSON
Discussing two legendary films dealing with Up Against the Wall Motherfuckers

MONDAY, MARCH 26TH – 8PM

Ben Morea, legendary anarchist bandit/badass, and one of the founders of Black Mask and Up Against the Wall Motherfuckers, joins us to discuss two films that captured two seminal and legendary actions of the New York City based group.

THE SIXTH SIDE OF THE PENTAGON

GARBAGE
dir. by Newsreel, 1968, 10 min.

In THE SIXTH SIDE OF THE PENTAGON, Chris Marker captures The Motherfuckers breaking into the Pentagon, while in GARBAGE, The Motherfuckers export garbage from their Lower East Side ghetto to the halls of Lincoln Center during a bitter sanitation workers strike.

Up Against the Wall Motherfuckers was an anarchist affinity group based in New York City. This “street gang with analysis” was famous for its Lower East Side direct action and is said to have inspired members of the Weather Underground and the Yippies.

The Motherfuckers grew out of the Dada-influenced art group, Black Mask, with some additional people involved with the anti-Viet Nam War Angry Arts week, held in January 1967. Formed in 1966 by painter Ben Morea and the poet Dan Georgakas, Black Mask produced a broadside of the same name and declared that revolutionary art should be “an integral part of life, as in primitive society, and not an appendage to wealth.” In May 1968, Black Mask changed its name and went underground. Their new name, Up Against the Wall Motherfuckers, came from a poem by Amiri Baraka. Abbie Hoffman characterized them as “the middle-class nightmare… an anti-media media phenomenon simply because their name could not be printed.”

Early Motherfuckers included Tom Neumann, the stepson of Herbert Marcuse, John Sundstrom, Alan Hoffman and Alan Phillips.

The Motherfuckers contributed to New York City’s counterculture by setting up crash pads, serving free food, starting a free store, and helping radicals connect with doctors and lawyers. They were opposed to and resisted on principle any attempt to impose order on the political demonstrations they participated in. Among other things, the Motherfuckers instigated brawls with Maoist groups such as the Progressive Labor Party. They were the first to use the term “affinity group” the term having been coined by Ben Morea.
